Where to Shop

Even though there are convenience stores on campus, buying your groceries at a supermarket can offer a larger selection and save you money. Whole Foods is within walking distance of campus, but it can be expensive and offers a limited selection of groceries and food items. For a larger selection with lower prices, you could shop at Jewel-Osco at the Greenleaf/Chicago intersection south of campus. The distance is too far to walk, but the Intercampus Shuttle that runs during the week stops right in front of the store. On select Sundays, there is a Shop ‘N Ride shuttle that stops at Target, which also offers a good selection of grocery and household items.

Downtown Evanston has a lot of private boutiques and large label clothing stores like Gap, Northface and Urban Outfitters. However, to get the full experience of a shopping mall, you can take the 201 CTA bus ($2.25 each way) to Old Orchard Mall. Old Orchard Mall is an outdoor mall with all of the usual big name stores like Macy’s and Nordstrom. In addition, they also have many restaurants including a Cheesecake Factory and a California Pizza Kitchen.

Fun Fact: Old Orchard Mall is mentioned in the movie “Mean Girls” as it takes place in Evanston, however the place depicted in the movie is clearly not the real Old Orchard Mall.

Sometimes you just need a new lamp, or a gift for Secret Santa. Thankfully, CVS is located a block away from south campus. In addition you can hop on the El at Noyes Street (about 7 minutes away) and get to downtown Chicago to shop on the Magnificent Mile.
